Angela van Breemen’s Revenge Not Taken Lightly is a contemporary, gritty, and suspense-filled paranormal crime mystery set in New Egan, Ontario, Canada. Emma Jackson is a gifted psychic who works with her husband, David Harris, a lawyer and PI, on cold-case crime investigations, involving missing persons and murder. Emma experiences intense and terrifying psychic messages from the murdered parents of a young girl, Thelma Tang. In 2023, Thelma was 16 when she was tried and convicted to 25 years in prison for the murder of her parents. Alice and Albert Tang. She is now 19. Thelma has steadfastly maintained that she is innocent and was framed. Her mother pleads with Emma to help Thelma prove her innocence. Emma and David, working with police investigators, begin to review the original evidence. Emma also feels a menacing presence that may be linked to a past investigation of a highly secret, violent, and dangerous criminal organization. A page-turner, the story twists and turns right to the very end.
I enjoyed reading Revenge Not Taken Lightly for its extraordinary psychic sleuth, Emma Jackson, and for its terrifying storyline. Emma’s psychic and empathic gifts come dramatically to life through unnerving encounters with spirits, particularly with Thelma’s mother, who is persistent and determined to prove that her daughter is innocent. Emma’s dialogues, with both living characters and those of the spirit world, were very skilfully crafted, bringing to life details visible only to Emma. Emma and the story gained great depth when she was faced with fearful visions, including threats from powerful and deadly spirits. I liked the inclusion of spirit guides who alert and protect Emma in deadly situations. I enjoyed the drama of the criminal investigation settings, showing the interaction and strong working relationships between Emma and the other members of the investigative team, bringing to the fore Emma’s psychic abilities and her critical role in solving the case. I highly recommend Angela van Breemen’s mystery to readers who enjoy paranormal detective stories with extraordinary psychic sleuths and a well-crafted, immersive storyline.
