Deep Into the Night’s Edge: A Water Kascade Novel by A.L. Wahdel
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I received an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
Deep Into the Night’s Edge, A.L. Wahdel’s second book in the Water Kascade series, is just as gritty as the first.
Kascade is burdened with a difficult task—to uncover corruption in his very own police department. Using a device called the Interceptor, he is able to track the comings and goings of his fellow police officers. His task isolates him from his colleagues, causing him psychological distress, as he is the only one assigned to this investigation, and because of its clandestine nature, he reports only to one individual. He juggles this secret mission, his regular work duties, and a complicated personal life and is shocked when all three collide.
Some of the passages are quite poetic, evoking strong imagery. Here are samples of my favourite lines:
“Kascade plucked a cup from Ryker’s hand, steam rising between them like incense.”
“The van stopped abruptly, expelling chunky plumes of white exhaust smoke onto the pavement.”
“Along the windy paths, bare trees reached skeletal branches toward the empty sky.”
“…the street was painted with remnants of road salt carved out by tire tracks.”
At first, the book is slow-moving; however, as it moves towards its conclusion, the action is exciting and quite thrilling. This is a great book for people who enjoy authentic police procedurals.
